The walk in more detail

From our meeting point in Wotton-Under-Edge, we join the Cotswold Way to explore the village, passing by Isaac Pitman’s house (inventor of shorthand), before viewing the oldest almshouses in Wotton.

This is followed by a chance to see The Ram Inn, the oldest building in Wotton dates from 1145 and has a fascinating history including some macabre ghostly tales.

Following the Cotswold Way we are led to St Mary’s Church, also dating from the 12th century, it houses some interesting artefacts.

Back to the Cotswold Way, we amble along the stream side to Coombe, a pretty hamlet on the outskirts of the town.

Rejoining the road to Wotton, we see some more beautiful almshouses, before climbing to the Tabernacle, a church dating from the 18th century, built by a charismatic evangelist.

Wandering back to Wotton’s main high street, we pick up the Cotswold Way again briefly before stopping to enjoy the Tolsey clock before ambling back to our starting position.

Please feel free to explore the Wotton Heritage Centre, located close to our finishing point, to learn more about this town’s wonderfully rich history.
